Caddo Lake Tour Itinerary 2010

Considered one of the most photogenic and scenic spots in Texas & Louisiana, Caddo Lake is a place of awe inspiring beauty!  The only “natural” lake in the state, its murky shallow water is filled with magnificent cypress trees draped with eerie Spanish moss. This swampy ecosystem is home to a myriad of unique wildlife like alligators, gar, huge turtles, and colorful birds like the giant Pileated Woodpecker and the delightful Prothonotary Warbler.  In the fall, the cypress trees turn a vivid yellow and the sweetgums are bright hues of red and gold.

We will leave the museum Thursday, led by the Heard’s Wildlife Biologist, Roger Sanderson, and arrive in time for a leisurely canoe trip that afternoon.   We will be staying at the quaint – and totally unique --Hodge Podge Cottages nestled right in the bayou in Uncertain, Texas.  Friday will start with a morning tour by the best local guide in his flat-bottom boat and the afternoon will be spent at the just opened Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge.  We’ll top off the evening with a visit and dinner in the historic town of Jefferson, known for its antiques and old southern charm.  Saturday we explore another area in our canoes, followed in the late afternoon by the awesome Graceful Ghost Steamboat Tour, a ride in an authentic steamboat similar to those that navigated these waters a century ago.  We will complete the day with a delicious catfish dinner.  We return Sunday, filled with vivid memories and lots of fantastic photos of an unbelievable place.
