Night Hiking in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex

Night Hikes

Overview

Heard After Dark

Explore the thrilling sights, smells, and sounds of night with Heard Trail Guides.

If you have ever been on a hike and the sun set before you finished, you know that experiencing a trail at night can be a completely different experience from hiking during the day. Landmarks change, as can your sense of direction. Even if you’ve hiked a trail several times, it can feel completely unfamiliar.

Moonwalk Night Hike

Come and experience February’s full moon with us! First we’ll spend some time inside discovering features of the moon that you can see with your own eyes and with binoculars. We may even get a few pointers on some easy to spot constellations too. Then we’ll go out on a night hike that will include some time to practice spotting what we’ve learned.

  • Have your own binoculars? Bring them.
  • Don’t have binoculars? We have some you can borrow.
  • Is this suitable for children? Children are welcome if they can walk for an hour for the night hike and sit through and participate in the inside learning portion.
  • What if the moon is covered with clouds that night? We’ll still do the inside learning portion and go on the night hike; it just may mean we don’t get in any outside practice.
  • What if it rains? If the weather is not suitable for a night hike (heavy rain or thunder and lightning), then we will reschedule the event. However, it may not be rescheduled on a full moon. Registrants will have the option of coming to the rescheduled date or being issued a refund.

Owl Prowl Night Hike

Join us for our annual fan favorite Owl Prowl. This year’s presentation features the Heard’s own screech owls, Pudge & Poe. Discover the answer to some commonly asked questions: Can they can turn their head all the around? How far away can they can hear a pin drop? Do they make a lot of noise when they fly? And are they like cats and cough up fur balls?  We’ll also talk about which owls make North Texas their home and how to identify them. After the live owl presentation, take a guided night hike on the sanctuary. Pre-registration required.
