Spring Break at the Heard

Overview

Have a fun Spring Break close to home

Less than 10 miles from downtown McKinney and only 30 miles from the heart of Dallas, it is the perfect location for a daytrip.

The Heard has shaded picnic facilities, 289 acres of varied eco-systems with miles of hiking trails running through them, a variety of special programs and exhibits, and much more. Plus, during Spring Break, we offer special programs for a variety of ages.

Covid-19 Considerations

  • Masks are required for all campers & staff.
  • Social distancing will be practiced in each camp room and when outside as much as possible.
  • A health screening that may include a temperature check will be done at check-in.
  • Only staff & campers will be allowed into the building/classroom areas and a one-way path with will be used for drop-off/pick-up.
  • All touch items will be single use and disinfected between uses (pencils, markers, scissors, etc.).
  • High touch areas will be disinfected before and after each camp.
  • Hand sanitizer and hand soap will be available at all times.

Spring Break Offerings

Spring break is just around the corner. And what better way to spend it than a visit to the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary in McKinney, TX!

 

With 289 acres in our nature preserve, visitors can explore the scenic beauty of North Texas while learning about the region’s flora and fauna. From March 9-16, the Heard will be offering a variety of fun programs that are sure to engage visitors of all ages. Take a stroll through the trails, spot the resident Texas wildlife, join a bird-watching tour, and more. Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to experience nature up close and personal this spring break at the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary! Learn more below.

The Family Campout will offer groups an evening of fantastic discovery after hours! Our programs include team-building activities, the opportunity to experience Texas wildlife, s’mores, and more. Experience what it’s like to be a member of the Heard’s nightlife. And, enjoy a night that your group will never forget! Pre-registration is required. Spots are limited, so be sure to get your ticket now.

Whether you consider yourself a birder, a birdwatcher or a casual nature observer, the diversity and health of the different habitats at Heard creates the perfect opportunity to observe a number of bird species, both resident and migrant. 

 

Second Saturday Bird Walks in the Heard Wildlife Sanctuary are intended to help beginning and intermediate birders with bird spotting and identification techniques. This program is included in general admission and free for Heard members.

We are typically closed on Mondays;  however, we will be open on March 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (guests will not be granted entry after 3 p.m.).

Our Spring Break Mini Camps offer a unique opportunity for children to learn about nature and science in a hands-on way. With a variety of themes to choose from, including wildlife, ecology, and geology, there’s something for everyone. Pre-registration required.

Experience the amazing diversity in wetland vegetation and wildlife while learning about the history and basics of wetland ecology. After a safety and canoeing introduction, spend about 40 minutes on a guided trail around the Heard wetlands, followed by free paddle time to explore on your own. Pre-registration required.

Join us for our annual fan-favorite Owl Prowl. This year’s presentation features the Heard’s own screech owls, Pudge & Poe. Discover the answer to some commonly asked questions: Can they can turn their head all the around? How far away can they can hear a pin drop? Do they make a lot of noise when they fly? And are they like cats and cough up fur balls?  We’ll also talk about which owls make North Texas their home and how to identify them. After the live owl presentation, take a guided night hike on the sanctuary. Pre-registration required.

Inspired by the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, each Nature Connection Walk will be an immersive time spent connecting with nature in our wildlife sanctuary. They will include guided activities done while walking, standing, and/or sitting along our trails. The trails and guided activities will change each month, making each walk a fresh experience. Pre-registration required.

The Heard is normally closed on Mondays, but will be open on Monday, March 11 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Guests may not be admitted after 4 p.m.) For more information about our scheduled hours of operations visit our Hours page.
